SUMNER – Students at Hartford-Sumner Elementary School will take part in a dedication of the campus peace park on Monday during their 8 a.m. weekly opening exercise.

The park was created using a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s School Box for Education that was awarded to the Nezinscot Valley Music Boosters Club.

School music instructor Megan Andrews Wright spearheaded the project.

The park’s focal point is a six-sided peace pole. “May peace prevail” is inscribed in six languages, English, Arabic, Japanese, Swahili, French and Abanaki, around the pole, which stands at the park’s center.

A unique feature in the park is a collection of outdoor instruments, a xylophone and several drums.

Students painted 112 stepping stones in an after-school workshop. They’ve been placed around the park in paths leading to benches.

To culminate the weeklong dedication, the musical group Inkaswasi from Peru will teach Peruvian music on Friday and offer a concert at the school Friday night.
