NORWAY – A 19-year-old Norway man was charged at his arraignment Friday in Oxford County Superior Court with attempted gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.
Joshua M. Lovell of 34 Whitman St. was arrested in Oxford on Thursday after the mother of a 15-year-old girl reported that her daughter had been raped.
According to an affidavit by Norway police officer Dana Wessling, the girl said Lovell invited her to watch movies at his apartment. The girl said Lovell touched her sexually without her consent and tried to have sex with her. Wessling said Lovell contacted him shortly after he spoke with Lovell’s father. According to the affidavit, Lovell admitted to sexual acts with the girl, but said they were consensual.
Lovell was initially charged with gross sexual assault and held on $10,000 cash or $100,000 surety bail at the Oxford County Jail. After his appearance in Oxford County Superior Court on Friday, the charge was amended to attempted gross sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.
Lovell is charged with taking a “substantial step” toward committing rape and engaging in sexual contact with a person who was unwilling.
Lovell is forbidden from contacting the girl and must complete a Maine Pre-Trial Services contract before he can be released on personal-recognizance bail. As of Friday evening, Lovell remained at the Oxford County Jail.
