NORWAY – Shortly after 8:30 Tuesday morning, large American flags began to appear on a long, white picket fence behind a house on Cummings Place.
First one, then two and finally eight in varying hues of red, white and blue draped over the freshly painted fence.
“I put them up this morning around the time of the attack,” said Iris Parlin as she and others across the nation stopped for a moment to pay tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001.
Parlin said she saw an e-mail circulating that asked people to fly their flags on Sept. 11 in memory of the victims and in honor of the men and women who have fought, and those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We’ve always flown a flag at our home,” said Parlin, who along with her husband, Everett, have lived in the 19th century house on Cummings Place behind the Fare Share parking lot for the past 41 years.
The Parlins said they fly flags, including some purchased by their daughter as a Father’s Day present, on a pole in front of their house until it fades, then the flag is added to those that are cleaned and stored carefully and brought out for special displays.
“I’ve always been proud of our county and have taken pride in displaying our flag,” said Everett Parlin of the flags.
