SUMNER – Unsafe or illegal speed was listed as a contributing factor in the Bonney Road crash that killed Amy Cerrato, 16, of Sumner last Wednesday.

An accident report released by Maine State Police on Monday shows the posted speed limit on the road is 35 mph.

Neither fatigue nor alcohol were listed as contributing factors in the accident and bus driver Merriel Perry, 63, of Sumner did nothing improper to contribute to the accident, the report shows.

Cerrato’s 1999 Isuzu Rodeo was southbound and out of control when it collided with a SAD 39 school bus transporting 35 elementary school students last Wednesday, the report filed by Trooper Corey Smith states. Six of those students were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where they were treated for minor injuries and released. Cerrato was also taken to CMMC, where she died.

Speed was listed as an “apparent contributing factor” on the report.

The report also states that while Cerrato was wearing her seat belt and that the airbag in her vehicle deployed in the crash, she was still partially ejected from the vehicle. Snow and a wet road surface were also noted on the report but not listed as factors in the accident.

Smith’s report estimates the damage to the 2003 Freightliner school bus at $45,000.

A memorial service for Cerrato, who was a sophomore at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School, was held Saturday at the school.

Memorial donations in honor of Cerrato’s life will go toward a scholarship fund for members of her high school class and may be mailed to: The Amy Fund, c/o Northeast Bank, Buckfield, ME 04220.
