WOODSTOCK – Selectmen were told Tuesday that $14,000 remains in an account set up for road improvements.

Already the town has upgraded Cushman Road, including a rebuild of the Route 26 intersection, Town Manager Vern Maxfield said.

He requested authorization to use that money to do another short section of Cushman Road that was planned for a later date.

“We have $14,000 left in the Cushman Road account,” he said, “and that would be enough to do another 1,000-foot section by the Neeberly section if you feel we should go ahead with that job now.”

The only concern registered by the selectmen regarded the lateness of the construction season, but Maxfield was confident that Pike Industries of Waterford would be able to do the job before the construction and paving season ends.

The board told Maxfield to make arrangements with Pike to do the project. Work will include grinding, shaping, ditching and repaving at a cost of $14 per foot.

In other business, Maxfield announced that he has received $284,000 of the 2006 tax commitment since the tax bills went out on Aug. 15.

“This is about one-sixth of the total commitment,” he said. “It is a bit slower, but we have to remember we were a bit later than usual in getting the bills out.”

Maxfield noted a hazardous-waste day when people can get rid of waste that cannot be accepted in the regular waste stream is planned for 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 7.

Selectmen decided not to meet on Oct. 5, their next usual meeting date, because Maxfield will be unable to attend due to vacation. The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
