NORWAY – The town’s recreational director has started a new basketball program for first- and second-graders, saying children are ready now at younger ages to begin participatory sports.
Debra Partridge, the recreational director, said the program will be collaborative and tailored to the age group
“It’s way too young to be competitive,” Partridge said Thursday. “We want to keep the pressure off. People have enough pressure,” she said.
Her T-ball program just four years ago had five 4-year-olds. Today, it has 20.
“I think things have changed. Younger ones are ready,” she said.
The basketball program is open only to Norway residents because of the gymnasium size, Partridge said.
The program currently has 17 children signed up for the program, which runs through Jan. 28. Participants will gather at the elementary school at 5 p.m. most Saturdays to shoot hoops and dribble balls until 7 p.m.
The basketball backboards are lowered for the 6- and 7-year-olds. The registration fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt and junior-sized basketball.
Partridge is also offering two winter programs: karate for grades 1 through 6, and bowling for grades 2 through 6.
