WOODSTOCK – The directors of Whitman Memorial Library in Bryant Pond received approval from the town’s selectmen to refinish the floors in the original section of the historic library.
Library board member Marta Clements said the directors received a quote for $2,400 from Gerald Broomhall of Locke Mills for the job. That quote was submitted to the selectmen.
She said the price includes sanding and sealing.
Selectmen Chairman Leon Poland said, “I’m sure the floor needs to be redone, as it has probably been years since it has been done. And I don’t think the estimate is bad at all.”
The vote to give the library board the go-ahead was unanimous.
Town Manager Vern Maxfield said, “We are receiving a total of $2,500 from T. Buck Construction for rental of the basement rooms at the library while they have been doing the Marrifield Hill Project. That will cover the cost, without having to worry where the $2,400 will come from.”
In other business, selectmen decided not to enter into discussions with West Paris and Greenwood regarding possibly regionalizing their fire departments.
Maxfield said the town’s firefighters are content with the way things are at this time, “and would rather keep the department as it is.”
“I’ve been told that we have mutual aid agreements with all our neighboring towns so we might as well stay as we are now,” he added.
West Paris and Greenwood are interested in regionalization because both towns need a fire chief and feel the time is right to contemplate joining forces.
The board also authorized Maxfield to check into the cost of having Lucas Tree Experts decorate the Christmas tree on the town common, rather that having the town’s highway crew do it. The town crew members have said they’d rather not continue with the project since they have other things they need to do and they don’t believe it would be much more expensive to have Lucas handle the project.
Maxfield said it might cost about $300 to have Lucas do the decorating, “but it would leave our crew open to do other jobs they need to be concentrating on.” The selectmen agreed and gave the go-ahead as long as the cost is between $500 and $800 and doesn’t go over that amount.
