NORWAY – A 19-year-old Norway man is in serious condition after losing control of his vehicle and striking a utility pole Monday, according to police.

Timothy Leach, 19, of 57 Point Lane, was traveling south on Pleasant Street when he lost control of the 1996 Geo Tracker he was driving, steered off the road and struck a utility pole, Maine State Trooper Adam Fillebrown said.

Leach had to be removed from the vehicle by rescue personnel and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by helicopter, Fillebrown said.

“I checked this morning,” the trooper said Tuesday. “He was in serious condition.”

State police handled the accident because of the nature of Leach’s injuries, Fillebrown said. Rescue workers were on the scene for nearly an hour and a half, he said.

The Geo Tracker was totaled, Fillebrown said.

He attributed the accident to Leach’s driving at “excessive speed for the road conditions.”

On Monday, Pleasant Street was covered with firmly packed snow that had been spread with sand.

The accident occurred across from the intersection of Emerson Road.
