WEST PARIS – Selectmen voted unanimously Thursday that Nov. 14 is the last day leaves will be accepted at the transfer station. The new policy will continue indefinitely.
“We used to have someone that would take the bags of leaves away for us,” Chairman Wade Rainey said, “but after finding regular trash in many of the bags, he stopped taking them. People should be able to take care of their own leaves anyway instead of the town. As a result we will take them until Nov. 14 for those who have already bagged theirs for this year, but after that people will have to take care of them themselves.”
Selectmen also voted unanimously to allow West Paris Metal to take the collected metal debris at no cost to the town, an offer that has been made by owner Ernie Yapp.
Having Yapp take the metal free of charge eliminates all hauling and tipping costs for it.
The board also discussed the handling of raffle money for the library trustees, and decided to ask the Maine Municipal Association about the legality of doing so.
Currently, money raised by raffles is turned in at the town office, and Town Manager Don Woodbury has been issuing checks to be sent to the winners. Board members, however, wondered if it is legal to continue that policy, even if the money is funneled through the library account.
Woodbury said the raffle-related money transactions are included in the regular town warrant every two weeks.
“We are handling the money for the library raffle to help them out and to provide checks and balances as to what the money is being used for,” he said.
The board thought it might be better for the Friends of the Library group to be responsible for handling the money through its own checking account. No decision was made on the issue pending a check with the MMA. A final decision will be made at the board’s next meeting in November.
It was announced that the West Paris Water District will hold a public hearing Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the town office regarding a Community Development Block Grant the district is seeking. If the grant is approved it will help finance new water lines on a portion of Main Street next summer as part of the ongoing Main Street improvement project. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
Selectmen voted to schedule their meeting at 5 p.m. Nov. 10. The office will be closed on Nov. 11, their usual meeting date, for Veterans Day.
