OXFORD – Selectmen accepted a gift of land next to the Riverside Cemetery that will extend its life another 30 years.

The gift of just under an acre of land came from Albertha Sanborn, the mother of Selectman Dennis Sanborn.

Sanborn said his parents created the cemetery when they sold the initial cemetery land to the town 30 years ago. Sanborn, who has sold lots in the 560-lot cemetery ever since its creation, said future gifts of land for cemetery use are planned by the family.

In other action, Town Manager Mike Huston said there will be improvements made this summer to the flow of traffic to the Head Start Center in town. A part of the driveway will be made one-way to make the parking lot safer for pickup and drop-off of Head Start students, Huston said.

Huston also said a poverty abatement of taxes that was denied by the town is being appealed to the county. The Oxford County commissioners will hear the abatement appeal at 11 a.m. March 16 at the commissioner’s office in the Oxford County Superior Courthouse.

Huston said he’s investigating the cost-benefits of having a company provide curbside pickup of trash, as opposed to operating the Oxford Transfer Station.

Oxford’s budget is $252,000 a year, while the budget for the Bethel Transfer Station, where curbside pickup is offered, is $224,969.

Huston said he has also talked to officials in Jay and at the Norway-Paris Transfer Station about their collection methods. He said he would be asking the solid waste committee to come up with several alternatives to be considered in this year’s budget.
