WOODSTOCK – Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a budget request of $10,300 from the town’s Recreation Board.
In a written request, the Recreation Board sought $300 for Central Maine Power Co., $1,000 for the municipal playground, $6,500 for the summer baseball and softball program, $500 for the town’s swim program, and $2,000 for work at the town beach.
According to Town Manager Vern Maxfield, however, the figure for the beach is probably too high and it will be reviewed before a final figure is placed in the March town meeting warrant.
It was explained that the beach needs more sand, stones reset to keep vehicles off the beach and bushes cut to improve sight distances. At the playground, walking paths need to be built, picnic tables purchased and set in place and site work needs to be done.
It was also decided that sometime in the future the recreation budget will probably have to be a bit larger to cover heating at the recreation building on Railroad Street. But Maxfield thought that the proposal of $10,300 should work for now as the Recreation Board does take in some money in reimbursement from the town of Greenwood, which shares in the recreation program, from sign-up fees and private donations. Also heating costs probably can be incorporated in the future with the general utility expenses for all town buildings.
The total expenditure for 2003 came to $10,546.78 taken from a town appropriation of $10,000 and about $1,200 in fees and donations.
