RUMFORD – Bail conditions for a Bethel man accused of having unlawful sexual contact with a 17-year-old girl were amended Tuesday morning in Rumford District Court.

Judge John D. McElwee approved a handful of amendments to defendant Brian S. Peterson’s conditions of release.

The amendments state that Peterson:

• must have no unsupervised contact with people under 18 years of age except his own children and except in connection with the operation of his pet store, Peterson’s Pets, Supplies and Novelties Pet Stop in Bethel, during business hours.

• cannot use alcoholic beverages in excess.

• is not allowed to be stopped, parked or standing within 300 feet of a Route 2 restaurant.

Both Peterson, 38, of Bethel, and his attorney, Heather Seasonwein of Laskoff & Associates in Lewiston, declined comment about the case after the motions hearing. Seasonwein pointed out that prosecuting attorney James Andrews made no objections to the amendments.

Peterson was arrested by Bethel police Chief Darren M. Tripp on Jan. 8 on the felony charge of unlawful sexual contact and misdemeanor charges of simple assault, two counts of disorderly conduct and two counts of harassment. He was released on $5,000 cash bail after being transported to Oxford County jail in South Paris.

Previous bail conditions stated that Peterson:

• cannot have any contact with children under the age of 18.

• cannot be within 300 feet of Telstar Regional High School in Bethel on Route 26.

• must submit to random drug or alcohol testing.

• must not possess or use liquor, alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs.

• must not possess or use dangerous weapons.

Tripp said he arrested Peterson following a five-hour investigation into a complaint by a 17-year-old girl. According to case files and a witness, the alleged sexual assault occurred on Jan. 4.

A Telstar High School student counselor filed the initial complaint on Jan. 7.

Peterson is to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. on April 2 in Rumford District Court.
