PARIS – A young Bridgton woman was airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center on Tuesday after driving across Park Street and colliding with an oncoming vehicle, police said.
Shelby Murch, 21, of Iredale Street, was driving a 1992 Toyota Paseo south on Park Street near Verrill’s Excavation and Land about 8 a.m. when she “for some reason swerved into the northbound lane of travel,” said Sgt. Michael Daily of the Paris Police Department.
Murch struck the driver’s side of a 2004 Lincoln Aviator sport utility vehicle, which was driven by Harvey Oest, 59, of Cape Elizabeth, Daily said. The left tires were torn from each vehicle in what Daily described as a “sideswipe” collision.
Police found debris from both cars spread along nearly 300 feet of the road, Daily said.
“Murch’s injuries were serious. I don’t think they were life threatening,” he said, adding that police had little chance to speak with her because she was immediately transported to the Lewiston hospital.
Murch was conscious when rescue workers arrived at the accident scene and said she had been driving to pick up a friend, Daily said.
A nursing supervisor at CMMC in Lewiston said Tuesday night that Murch was in fair condition.
Oest suffered lacerations to his head and was transported along with his passenger to Stephens Memorial Hospital, Daily said. He was listed by hospital officials as being “in stable and good condition” Tuesday afternoon.
Daily did not have information on the passenger’s name or place of residence Tuesday, but said he believed the individual was not seriously hurt.
“Right now I don’t believe that speed or alcohol played a factor (in the accident),” Daily said. Both vehicles appeared to have been in good condition, and Murch’s car had recently been inspected, he said.
Park Street was closed and traffic was routed over Paris Hill Road from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Daily said, allowing accident reconstructionists to work on the scene.
