PARIS – Subdivision application fees have increased due to a request by the Planning Board.

Developers now will be charged for all postage costs related to subdivision applications, as well as $5 per plan “for stationary, envelopes and time,” according to a memorandum request approved by the Board of Selectmen on Monday.

The new fees will “cover the cost of sending registered letters to the abutters of the sub-division plan,” the memo states. It was signed by board Chairman John Barlow and Code Enforcement Officer Al Holden.

The Planning Board first discussed increasing subdivision application fees at a July meeting, when it was noted that the town charged only $25 per subdivision application. The town then covered the cost of all associated mailings.

“It could cost us $400 or $500 just to notify the abutters if we get a little development close to town,” Holden said at the time.

With a 5-0 vote of approval from the Board of Selectmen on Monday, the fee increases went into effect immediately.

In a separate memorandum, the Planning Board also asked the selectmen to consider an ordinance change to increase the lot-size requirements for duplexes.

That change would have to be approved by voters at a town meeting.

According to the memo, which was again signed by Barlow and Holden, the current ordinance allows duplexes to be built on 10,000-square-foot lots on town water and sewer.

At the July meeting, Planning Board members said they felt that was too small a lot.

As a result, the requested ordinance change calls for a minimum lot size requirement of 20,000 square feet for duplexes on town water and sewer.

The memo requested the question be put to voters at “the next town meeting,” but the selectmen amended the document to say “next annual town meeting” before accepting it with a 5-0 vote.
