MEXICO – A 23-year-old Mexico woman was arrested Monday on a felony charge of criminal restraint by a parent as a result of taking her two young children out of state.

Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said the arrest of Nicole Belskis followed a weeklong investigation that began Dec. 29 when the legal guardian of the 1- and 2-year-old girls reported that Belskis had left the state with the tots.

Hodsdon said Belskis called from a bus terminal in Kentucky. He told her that she would probably not be charged if she returned home with the children.

No one heard from her until Jan. 4 when she called from Arkansas where her husband lives. On Jan. 7, the legal guardian of the children was told that Belskis was back in the area.

Hodsdon arrested her on Waldo Street in Rumford. The children are still in Arkansas.

She was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris where she remains in lieu of $2,000 cash bail. She is scheduled to be appear in court March 20.

In the meantime, Hodsdon said he is working with the Oxford County District Attorney’s office to try to get the children back from Arkansas.

A meeting with the district attorney has been set for Jan. 23 to discuss the custody issue.
