RUMFORD – Rumford police got a “two-for-one deal” late Christmas Eve when they arrested a man caught driving a stolen car, then arrested the car’s owner on an outstanding warrant.

On Monday night, after Patrolman Tracey Higley spotted the stolen 1983 Plymouth Acclaim and pulled it over, its driver fled onto NewPage Corp. property, police Sgt. David Bean said Wednesday afternoon.

Higley caught and arrested the man, Greg Fowler, 37, of Roxbury, on charges of operating under the influence (second offense) and refusal to submit to arrest.

Fowler failed to post $1,000 cash bail and was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris. He will be arraigned Feb. 5 in Rumford District Court.

Before he was taken to jail on Christmas Day, Mexico police also arrested Fowler on a charge of felony theft in connection with the stolen Plymouth, Bean said.

Mexico police were involved because the theft happened there.

Bean said a routine registration check revealed that the car’s owner, Joseph John Salatka Jr., 46, of Rumford, was wanted.

Rumford police arrested Salatka on an Oxford County warrant charging failure to appear on charge of operating after suspension. Salatka was also taken to the Paris jail.

As of Wednesday night, both men were still incarcerated.
