BETHEL – A Rumford man awaiting arraignment next month on an August charge of drunken driving, ran afoul of the law again Friday when he crashed his car through a concrete wall behind the Rite Aid Pharmacy store off Route 2 in Bethel.
Police Chief Alan Carr summoned Richard Bradeen, 63, on charge of operating after suspension after the 12:58 p.m. accident. Bradeen was taken by Bethel Rescue to Rumford Hospital where he was treated and released by late afternoon, according to a nursing supervisor.
Carr said Bradeen drove his 1994 black Nissan Altima around the front and side of the store, presumably toward the prescription drop-off and pickup lanes behind the store. However, instead of rounding a corner to the lanes, the car accelerated down a short straightaway passing a Federal Distributors truck with its driver offloading merchandise.
The Nissan jumped a curb and slammed into the wall, inside which were two Dumpsters. Bradeen got out of the car, which was wedged halfway through the wall, and was standing behind it when Carr drove in with his cruiser, the chief said.
“He said he blacked out, but he probably had had enough to drink to black out. Alcohol was definitely involved,” Carr said. “I imagine that if he did black out, he did hit the gas. Hitting the wall would wake him up. He said he wasn’t injured when I talked to him.”
Rite Aid assistant store manager Richard Smith said he heard the car hit the wall and went out to investigate after the Federal Distributors driver entered to report the accident.
“It sounded just like thunder,” Smith said of the crash. The delivery driver “said he heard the car speed up and the next thing he knew, it crashed.”
Carr estimated damage to the Dumpsters’ enclosure at $2,000.
“Luckily, he didn’t hurt anybody,” the chief said, adding that Bradeen has 14 prior driving violations and a license that has been suspended for a while.
On Aug. 27, Bradeen crashed his 1988 Chevrolet pickup truck off Route 2 in Newry, driving through a utility pole, a couple of trees and into a pile of soft dirt or gravel that prevented the vehicle from entering Bear River, according to Oxford County Sheriff’s Department Cpl. Chancey Libby.
Carol A. Adley, 64, a passenger in Bradeen’s truck, suffered serious injuries and was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Although Libby said he summoned Bradeen for drunken driving because he had a blood alcohol level of .08 percent, the corporal didn’t think alcohol factored into that accident. Libby said he thought Bradeen, who refused to go to the hospital, had passed out due to a medical condition.
Regarding Friday’s charge, Bradeen will be arraigned Dec. 4 in Rumford District Court. He will also be arraigned on the August charge on Nov. 6 in the same court.
