RUMFORD – Two Bethel residents were arrested on felony robbery charges Wednesday night, accused of taking a jacket, cell phone and a can of smoking tobacco from a Rumford man on Lincoln Avenue.

Keenan S. Angevine, 19, and a 17-year-old male were caught by police a short distance from the scene, Sgt. James Bernard said. They were being taken to the Oxford County Jail in Paris. The juvenile is on probation and was to be held, he said.

The sergeant said he went to the scene and found the 42-year-old Rumford man who had been robbed and a witness to the crime and got a description of the two suspects.

“He had a coat taken, a cell phone taken and some items that he’d just purchased from a local convenience store,” including a can of smoking tobacco, he said.

A short time later, officer Tracey Higley found two males who matched the suspects’ descriptions about a quarter of a mile farther down Lincoln Avenue. He also recovered the jacket, cell phone and tobacco.

“The victim was able to positively identify the two suspects,” Bernard said.

He said the man suffered a black eye and minor scrapes and bruises on his arms but refused medical treatment.

“He was pushed off a cement wall, and they both started to kick and punch him. As soon as he was able to get up, he ran and called police,” the officer said.

The initial call to police was a report of an assault at Mountain Valley Variety at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Hancock Street at 9:24 p.m.

Bernard determined it was a strong-arm robbery, described as a theft in which force is used. Maine State Police Trooper Kyle Tilsley assisted in the investigation.
