DIXFIELD – Three people were seriously injured Friday night on Route 2 in Dixfield after their vehicle hit a moose and a utility pole.
Investigating state police Trooper Daniel Hanson said a 22-year-old Dixfield man driving the westbound 1999 Kia Sephia sedan was taken by NorthStar Ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
A 21-year-old Pennsylvania woman and a 21-year-old Mexico man were taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital. Hanson said state police were not releasing names of the injured due to the seriousness of their injuries.
Med-Care paramedic Diane Irving said the people trapped in the car were conscious and breathing. They had multiple lacerations and head injuries, she said.
The wreck occurred about 8:48 p.m. when the Kia struck the moose near the center of the road. The moose was thrown into the windshield, and it peeled back the car’s roof, said Oxford County Deputy Michael Halacy.
Rumford and Dixfield firefighters were not able to extricate the driver and the woman trapped in the front seat until a Central Maine Power crew arrived at 9:30 p.m. to cut electrical power. Wires were draped over the crushed hood of the car.
The Mexico man freed himself from the wreckage.
Hanson and Trooper Kyle Tilsley retrieved a bloodied six-pack of beer down the embankment from the car and brought it up to the road.
“Indications are that alcohol was involved, but whether this will be a situation where it’s an OUI is not known yet,” Hanson said.
