MEXICO – A Dixfield mother and her two young children escaped serious injury late Friday morning when the van she was driving collided with a dump truck.

Mexico Officer Dean Benson said Samantha Moretto, 26, was driving west on Route 2 shortly after 11 a.m. when she failed to see that a truck had signaled to turn into Coulthard’s Pools and Spas.

When she saw that the truck had stopped, she swerved to try to avert a collision and hit its right rear section.

Her 2005 Dodge Caravan was destroyed. She and her 1-year-old daughter, Eryka, were taken to Rumford Hospital by Med-Care Ambulance Service, where they were treated and released in the late afternoon. Her 3-year-old son, Kody, was not hurt. Her children were strapped into child-safety seats and she was wearing a seat belt.

The dump truck, driven by Robert Young, 53, Mexico, sustained about $400 damage. Young was not hurt.

Members of the Mexico Fire Department rerouted the heavy Fourth of July traffic around the accident for more than a half hour.
