MEXICO – Scores of people flocked to Advance Auto Parts on Thursday morning when the second largest auto parts chain in the country opened its newest store on River Street.

The Mexico store, many months in the making, is the eighth Advance Auto Parts store in the state.

Tim Gray, assistant manager, said the newest addition to the area’s economy employs 13 part- and full-time people.

With 6,000 square feet and 30 parking spaces, it is the smallest of the eight in Maine.

“This is a test market for smaller communities,” said Gray.

The thousands of auto-related items are geared toward both commercial businesses and individuals, he said. The business also carries Match Box toys and other items for kids, sodas and snacks.

“We help do-it-yourselfers. We find out their project then help out,” he said.

The business also delivers auto parts within a 20-mile radius to commercial businesses.

Tom Gaudet, manager of the store, said the chain has a strong focus on being involved in the community. He said the local store will help sponsor Rumford’s annual soap box derby, the golf tournament scheduled for the Moontide Water Festival, and a car show at Andover Olde Home Days, among other events. He said the store will also likely hold car washes and other events to raise money for various local causes.

The Mexico store accepts, at no charge, oil and batteries for recycling. Gray said virtually any auto part can be ordered through Advance Auto, including those for street rods and other older vehicles.

A grand opening with prizes, specials, drawings, giveaways and a live remote is scheduled for July 3. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Advance Auto is based in Roanoke, Va. It operates more than 2,500 stores.
