DIXFIELD – Selectmen were apprised Monday of an upcoming session with a Maine warden regarding all-terrain-vehicle laws.

Police Chief Richard A. Pickett said Warden Shon Theriault has offered to hold a session for police and selectmen on all the new changes coming in August when Gov. John Baldacci’s ATV Task Force recommendations become effective.

Pickett also mentioned one instance of illegal activity that he witnessed Saturday afternoon on the town’s ATV access route to Ellis’s Variety on Weld Street.

“We realize we’re an ATV-snowmobile friendly town, but what’s troubling me is that on Saturday, I saw a man leaving Ellis’s on an ATV after getting gas. There was a young fellow, probably about 9 or 10, following him on a smaller ATV, and another young boy on a two-wheel dirt bike, and that’s illegal,” he said.

“Children can’t ride up and down the road on a dirt bike or an ATV.”

Pickett also said that speed limit signs on the access route had been illegally altered from 10 mph to 15 mph, and that children under age 16 who were found operating unregistered ATVs would be issued a summons.
