BETHEL – Timothy A. Carter has announced that he is seeking the Democratic nomination for state representative for House District 91.

District 91 includes Eustis, Kingfield, Rangeley, Bethel, Newry, Gilead, Stoneham, Upton, Woodstock and Hanover; Dallas, Lincoln and Magalloway plantations; Milton, Mason and Albany townships; and unorganized territories in northern and east central Franklin County and northern Oxford County.

Carter is a sixth-generation Bethel resident.

He has worked as an advocate for more than 30 years in agriculture on the local, state and federal levels.

He was a member of the Oxford County Farm Bureau, serving as its county president (1987-1991) and as a state director (1984-1986), and a member of the Governor’s Agriculture Advisory Council (1982-1988).

He was northeast area director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1994-2001.

Carter served as an officer in the Army. “Being an officer was one of the best and worst experiences in my life. It taught me about management, discipline, leadership and teamwork,” he said.

A proponent of accessible health care and small business, Carter said he understands the necessity of affordable health care. “Small businesses pay outrageous premiums. If the Dirigo health plan does what it’s supposed to do, it will help numerous people and small businesses alike. By being a member of the plan, small businesses would be able to cover their employees’ health care needs and save money. The savings should be available to then invest in their businesses, maybe even to hire more employees.”

Carter said he is also committed to investing in education and creating fair tax solutions.
