RUMFORD CENTER – From music and history to food and old-time games and antique cars, the village of Rumford Center promises a little bit of everything Saturday.
Sponsored by the education committee of the Rumford Historical Society with the assistance of the Mexico Historical Society, the daylong event aims to raise money for scholarships for Mountain Valley High School students.
No admission will be charged, but any donations will help to establish scholarships.
Perhaps central to the day’s activities are history-related events, with a special emphasis on the Civil War.
Local historian Len Greaney has compiled a listing of 1,000 names of Civil War veterans from the River Valley area. Those names, along with birth and death dates and other information, will be displayed on a “wall” of Civil War participants, or will be stored in the database of a laptop computer. An encampment of Civil War re-enactors portraying Company A of the Third Maine Regiment will be set up all day.
The date is also the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Rumford Center Lufkin School Museum, which houses thousands of historical artifacts. It will be open all day. A descendant of the Lufkin family, William French, will speak briefly before the beginning of the music.
Several dozen antique cars will be on display, some offering a chance for a ride. Attendees may dress in the garb of the era and have their photos taken, as well.
Music and humor begin at noon with humorist David Kimball as master of ceremonies.
Musical performers will include the MVHS Jazz Band, fiddler Jim Roy, Frank and the Dawgs playing music from the 1960s and 1970s, and blues and country music by the Muddy Bottom Band. A mime, “Charlie Who,” will roam throughout the village during the early part of the afternoon.
A special children’s area will be set up to offer a sack race, potato race and a haystack hunt, where youngsters will search for money and toys in a haystack.
Also happening throughout the day are crafts demonstrations and sales, and a flea market. Food such as popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream and hot dogs will be available. Also available are baked goods from the Mexico Historical Society, and pizza. Raffles for such things as movie tickets, fuel oil, golfing and Scrapper’s Domaine classes will be sold until 3 p.m.
Supper is offered at the West Bethel Union Church at 5:30 p.m., followed by a free performance by the 26-member Yankee Band at 7 p.m. in Bethel village.
