DIXFIELD – Police have been busier than they’ve ever been thanks to heightened security measures.

Calls for service in the first quarter of 2003 jumped substantially from the first quarter of 2002, according to a press release.

The volume for January through May of 2003 was 1,944 calls, which more than doubled the 898 calls over the same time last year.

“A vast majority of the increase in activity came from an increased departmentwide emphasis on security measures throughout the Town of Dixfield,” the document states.

Security checks of public, commercial and residential properties, usually by request, accounted for more than 36 percent of all activity for the entire year.

Dixfield police averaged 358 first quarter service calls between 1998 and 2001.

Activity between midnight and 6 a.m. more emphatically reflects the increased effort in department security functions, the release states.

“While the activity volume between midnight and 3 a.m. during 2001 (351) was nearly identical to the volume between noon and 3 p.m. (349), that comparison changed dramatically in 2002. The volume between midnight and 3 a.m. in 2002 (819) more than doubled the volume between noon and 3 p.m. (384),” the document stated.

In other police news, the fine for vehicle inspection violations in Maine jumped from $88 to $122 on May 1.
