NEW SHARON – A Skowhegan man was arrested after he crashed into several vehicles in a car dealership Dec. 22.
Tracy Steward, 38, told police officers he thought he was headed home on Route 8 at 9:13 p.m. However, he had been heading north on Route 27 when he ran a stop sign at the intersection of Route 2, hit a curb in front of Tuttle’s Auto Sales and “launched off it,” according to Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy David Rackliffe.
Rackliffe said Steward’s vehicle flew over one car, damaging it, then hit a 1999 Ford Taurus broadside. The Taurus slid into a 2000 Cavalier, damaging it as well. Damage to the three vehicles was estimated at between $7,000 and $8,000.
Rackliffe, who arrived after two state troopers, said Steward admitted to driving under the influence and failed to complete a breath test. He made “feeble attempts to complete the test,” said Rackliffe, which the state considers to be a failed test. He also refused a blood test.
Steward was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal mischief, operating under the influence, driving to endanger and failing to sign a summons. He was also issued four traffic violations, including failing to stop for a stop sign, invalid insurance card, invalid inspection sticker and holding more than one valid driver’s license.
He was released from the Franklin County Jail on Dec. 23 on $500 cash and $3,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear in court on the charges on Feb. 23.
