RANGELEY – Selectmen discussed a request from the local snowmobile club for a gift of land from the town on Tuesday.
Don Dumont of the Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club is seeking a three-acre parcel on Loon Lake Road. The transfer would have to be approved by voters at the June town meeting. The Snowmobile Club wants to initially build a barn to store snow-grooming equipment and subsequently to build a clubhouse.
Town Manager Perry Ellsworth said the town must ensure access to the property and to review other documents, which may impact use, before the request could be put on the town warrant.
Selectman Dick Morton was excused from the board to speak regarding the current road construction ordinance. He and Don Morton have received approval from the Rangeley Planning Board for the Quimby Pond Overlook subdivision.
The Mortons’ parcel is 267 acres. Approximately 55 acres are to be developed into 14 lots ranging in size from 1.9 to 7.9 acres.
The Mortons have requested clarification on the town’s road ordinance for the road’s base material for a privately maintained road. Currently, the ordinance, according to Code Enforcement Officer Bob Griscom, does not allow for any difference between public and private roads and requires that both the road base and the road surface be gravel.
Ellsworth, who has also become the town’s road commissioner, said, “The current ordinance doesn’t allow for variance on private or public roads.”
The ordinance specifies a gravel base of 18 inches for all roads. Selectman sent the ordinance back to the Ordinance Committee for further examination.
In other business, selectmen voted unanimously to renew special amusement licenses for The Rangeley Inn, The Country Club Inn, Parkside & Main, The Gingerbread House, Sarge’s Pub & Grub, Four Season’s Caf, Bald Mountain Camps and The Saddleback Motor Inn.
The board also voted unanimously to renew vendors licenses for Rangeley Friends of the Arts, Rangeley Ladies Fire Auxiliary, Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association, The Peanut House, Dunham’s Lobster Pot, Treasures on the Island and Rangeley Lakes Resort.
The board also approved liquor licenses for The Gingerbread House and Four Season’s Caf.
Selectman approved three purchase orders: $4,500 for the Maine Municipal Association for the town manager search, $3,970 from the sewer equipment reserve for Wright-Pierce for updates to the sewer installation manuals and $18,235 for Langford and Lowe for Town Office construction costs.
The board reviewed correspondence from the Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP’s letter regarding storm-water runoff for the Quimby Pond Overlook subdivision was forwarded to the Planning Board.
Selectman decided to hold the town election from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 8 at the Town Office, and town meeting at 6:30 p.m. June 15 at the Rangeley Lakes Regional School.
Several special meetings will be held in the coming weeks to prepare for the annual meeting. The next regularly scheduled selectmen’s meeting will be 6:30 p.m. June 1 at the Town Office.
