Candidates need 100 signatures.

FARMINGTON – Three Franklin County residents have taken out nomination papers to run for sheriff. All three are members of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Albert Smith of Wilton plans to run as a Democratic candidate.

Detective Tom White of Jay plans to run as a Republican candidate.

Sheriff Dennis Pike of Farmington is seeking re-election as a nonparty candidate.

Only party candidates participate in the June primary to see which person represents each party in the November election, Pike said.

Those candidates need 100 signatures from people enrolled in their party, he said, while as a nonparty candidate he needs 500 signatures from any party.

Pike said both White and Smith came to him to tell him they planned to seek the sheriff’s position.

It’s their constitutional right, Pike said, and he gave them his blessing.

The election for the four-year term of sheriff will be held in November.
