JAY – Members of the Jay Education Association have accepted the School Committee’s offer to resolve a grievance. The association’s president said teachers are accepting it as a show of good faith.

School Committee members voted 3 to 2 on Nov. 13 to pay teachers experience-step increases without the interest.

Association members had filed a grievance after they didn’t get the step pay increases at the beginning of the year. Even though teachers are working under a contract that took effect in 1999 and expired in 2002, there is a duration clause in that contract, Association President Sherry Gilbert said. That clause allows for a continuing agreement for each succeeding year of the contract, until it changes. Not all teachers get increases for experience steps, including teachers at the top of the scale.

“The association is very pleased with the vote by the School Committee,” Gilbert said.

The association is hoping, she said, that this means that they are going to turn the corner in negotiations and hopefully that the contract can be settled.
