100 years ago, 1909

At a recent meeting of the French merchants of Lewiston and Auburn it was voted that on and after Jan. 17, only one delivery will be made each day and that all persons carrying an account will be required to make a settlement at least once in two weeks. By adopting this plan, which they say will be carried out to the letter, the merchants say they will be able to sell on a closer margin.

50 years ago, 1959

The City of Lewiston will send a bouquet of flowers in memory of Governor Clauson, who died unexpectedly early Wednesday morning. Meeting in special session late yesterday afternoon, the aldermen voted to send funds for this purpose and recommends a budget transfer to the Finance Board.

Mayor Romeo T. Boisvert and other city officials plan to attend the funeral services.

Bates College will play host to Division I ski competition at its 65th annual Winter Carnival Jan. 10-13.

The four-day event, the second oldest such festivity in the country, will feature snow sculptures, student athletic contests, dances and concerts by several well-known entertainers.

Highlighting the carnival will be an alpine ski meet at Pleasant Mountain in Bridgton and a cross-country ski meet at Snorada in Auburn Jan. 11-12, both sanctioned by the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association.
