WILSONS MILLS – An extensive six-day wilderness emergency medical technician course, sponsored by Franklin Memorial Hospital EMS, is being offered on Sept. 10-12 and Sept. 17-19. Each day of training lasts all day.
The course, taught by Mountain Aid Training International Inc., is a 54-hour upgrade of the Department of Transportation’s EMT and EMT-P curriculum.
Participants will learn extensive wilderness emergency skills to care for patients and themselves in austere environments that demand extended care protocols and demands of both physical and mental abilities.
The course consists of lectures in the mornings, with skills and practice stations in the afternoons and evenings. The pass/fail course has an intense training schedule that demands both physical and mental abilities.
Instructors will be physicians, registered nurses and EMTs with more than 50 years of combined of wilderness outdoor education experience. Instructors have individual specializations in search and rescue, disaster medical assistance, survival, mountaineering, whitewater trip guiding, and expedition medicine.
The course is free to Franklin Memorial Hospital ambulance and emergency department staff, and $475 for all others. To register, visit the FMH Education Department or call Kristin Grondin at 779-2381 before Sept. 3.
