JAY – Playground equipment that volunteers raised thousands of dollars to buy a decade or so ago has been deemed unsafe by the insurance company and needs to be removed, Jay school Superintendent Robert Wall said Friday.
The School Committee voted unanimously Thursday to have the equipment removed from behind the Jay Elementary School, he said.
The playground equipment is made of wood and includes swings and slides and various platforms, Wall said.
The equipment will be dismantled this weekend, he said.
There are plans to put another playground equipment structure at the school with volunteers working on raising funds for it, he said.
According to selectmen’s June meeting minutes, there had been 80 injuries in 20 weeks on the playground equipment.
Selectmen voted in July to grant a $5,000 donation from a recreation fund to go toward the playground contingent on the insurance company accepting the design and material of the new playground plan and a plan to assign responsibility for the maintenance of the new and old equipment.
Volunteer Judy Diaz who is leading the new playground venture was unavailable for comment Friday.
