MEREDITH, N.H. (AP) – The aviator in charge of declaring “Ice Out” on New Hampshire’s largest lake says the call could come as early as next week.
Dave Emerson of Emerson Aviation flew over Lake Winnipesaukee last weekend. He told the Citizen that while there’s still plenty of ice, it’s melting fast thanks to the recent warm, wet and windy weather.
“Ice Out” occurs when the M/S Mount Washington can travel to all its ports between Center Harbor and Meredith. In records going back to 1887, the earliest date was March 28 and the latest was May 12. The usual date falls between April 20 and April 24.
