BOSTON (AP) – The Boston firefighter who competed in a bodybuilding contest while out on disability leave has failed to return to work, as ordered.

Albert Arroyo had filed for a disability pension in April, claiming he suffered a career-ending back injury.

But in May, he competed in a national bodybuilding competition.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve McDonald says Commissioner Roderick Fraser docked Arroyo his pay for failing to show up for work Monday.

McDonald says under state law, an unauthorized absence from work for 14 days can result in termination.

After a report in The Boston Globe, Fraser ordered the 46-year-old Arroyo to return to his job Monday with the Fire Prevention Division.

A call to Arroyo’s lawyer was not immediately returned.
