Sun Spots located an Introduction to American Sign Language being offered at the Region 9 Learning Center in Mexico. Call the Region 9 Learning Center at 364-2012 for more information. In addition, the Lewiston Adult Education program also offered a 14-week class which started in September. They are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.

In the meantime, you might also check out www.craigslist.org (Maine). The site advertises a native ASL speaker available for lessons and tutoring sessions in the Portland area and willing to travel up to 45 minutes away.

In the meantime, another option is the United Methodist Economic Ministry on Route 142, 1458 Salem Road, Salem Township, ME 04983, 678-2611. They do furniture repair and refinishing. The furniture shop is part of the United Methodist’s mission site, where their philosophy is to clothe the naked, feed the hungry and help the poor. They also run a thrift store and food pantry.

Dear Sun Spots: The First Universalist Church of Auburn is seeking distance volunteers and donations for their New Orleans’ rebuilding project.

Almost 30 church members and friends will head to New Orleans over Thanksgiving. We are working with a post-Katrina rebuilding project set up by volunteers from the UU church in Rockland.

If you would like to be a distance volunteer, or know a business that would like to support the group, donations are gratefully accepted. Please make a cheque out to the church office, 159 Pleasant Street, Auburn, ME 04210 and mark it to the attention of Cindy Greathouse.

Anyone interested in supporting this project might also consider attending a night of Cajun food, dance and music at the church Nov. 3. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
