CONCORD, N.H. – The father of one of three men who were fatally shot at a Conway store last month said Wednesday that the man accused of the killings has agreed to plead guilty and face life imprisonment.
Michael Woodbury, 31, of Windham, Maine, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of the manager and two customers at an Army Barracks store on July 3.
Woodbury, who was later arrested in Maine, publicly admitted outside of a courthouse in that state to shooting the men, store manager James Walker, 34, of Denmark, Maine, William Jones, 25, of Walpole, Mass., and Gary Jones, 23, of Halifax, Mass.
“He’s going to plead guilty on three counts of first-degree murder with no parole,” in exchange for a better choice of prison, said Kenny Jones, father of William Jones.
The story was first reported by WMUR-TV.
Jones, speaking to The Associated Press from his home in Walpole, said Woodbury has been moved from the Carroll County Jail in Ossipee to the state prison in Concord.
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office has not confirmed that a plea deal has been made; Jones said his family was contacted by the office Wednesday and last week.
“I don’t care what prison he’s in as long as he stays forever and rots there,” Jones said. “I just hope New Hampshire doesn’t drop the ball like the state of Maine,” where Woodbury was released from prison earlier this year after maxing out a five-year sentence. The killings happened less than two months later.
In his public admission, Woodbury said he warned officials he was a threat to re-offend after being released, even writing a four-page manifesto to a prison therapist telling her “about how this (expletive) was going to crack like this.” He said prison officials were unresponsive.
Maine prison officials said Woodbury had access to mental health and other services while in prison, but their responsibility to him ended with his release because he was not on probation.
“He knew he was guilty,” Kenny Jones said of the shootings. “There was a witness in the police report” who saw him kill his son, Jones said.
“The kids were just going camping,” Jones said. “It’s just such a stupid thing. He’s a 31-year-old punk, that’s all he is.”
