BOSTON (AP) – A Mattapan man bolted out of a vehicle at a traffic stop in Revere, triggering a foot chase by local and state police that ended when the 25-year-old fatally shot himself to the head, an official said Sunday.

State Police detectives are investigating circumstances surrounding the death, which followed a Saturday evening traffic stop on Route 16 of a motor vehicle in which he was a passenger, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney’s office.

The owner of that vehicle was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant. Another occupant fled the scene on foot, with Revere Police and State Troopers giving chase, Wark said in a statement.

“Police followed that man to a set of train tracks near the Beachmont MBTA station, where he produced a handgun and, despite appeals by those at the scene, turned it on himself and sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head,” according to the statement.

Officials did not release his identity. His family was notified Sunday afternoon after authorities confirmed his identity through his fingerprints.
