NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) – At least 23 communities will weigh in on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and the impeachment of President Bush at town meetings next month.

Organizers of the impeachment resolution had hoped to reach 30 to 50 towns but say the topic will come up in more communities during town meeting discussions of other business.

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, known for camping outside of President Bush’s ranch after her son died in Iraq, will tour Vermont early next month to promote the resolution.

She’ll be joined by Newfane Select Board member Dan DeWalt, who is credited with launching the effort to get towns to vote on the impeachment issue last year.

“Impeachment has more support this year than it did last year,” DeWalt said. “The situation has taken a nightmarish turn for the worse since we first raised the question in Newfane.”

Supporters say they believe the president had misled the country into war and violated international torture treaties.
