CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – The heaviest stone ever quarried in North America will become part of a memorial commemorating the Old Man of the Mountain, the state’s famous symbol that fell from a cliffside in Franconia Notch three years ago.

The memorial’s design, announced Wednesday, calls for five huge stones that when viewed from a raised platform merge into one form evoking the outline of the famous rock profile. The largest granite stone will be half the size of the original face at about 20 feet in height and will weigh nearly 120 tons.

The memorial will extend along the pathway from the existing Old Man of the Mountain Museum near the base of Cannon Mountain to the shore of Profile Lake, one of the main places where people went to look at the Old Man before it collapsed in May 2003.

The Legacy Fund, a nonprofit group that is raising money for the memorial and will oversee its construction, selected the design by sculptor Shelly Bradbury and designer Ron Magers of Essex, Mass., from among more than 40 applicants.

In addition to the stone monoliths, their design also includes a gateway consisting of two stones held in place by cables and turnbuckles to honor the Old Man’s caretakers, who used such equipment to secure its uppermost rocks for decades.

The third element of the memorial will be a new park at the water’s edge featuring steel cannon-like “profilers” that will allow viewers to line up the sculptures’ irregular edges and “see” the outline of the Old Man on the cliff where it once appeared.

“This is a truly magnificent design which will create new memories for young people who’ve never experienced the Old Man, while bringing back pleasant old memories for those who’ve made Franconia Notch a regular visit,” said Van McLeod, commissioner of the state Department of Cultural Resources.

The five large stones will come from the Rock of Ages quarry in Barre, Vt. The rest of the granite for the project will come from the Swenson Granite quarry in Concord.
