BOSTON (AP) – Gov.-elect Deval Patrick made more appointments Saturday as he fills out his staff before taking office on Jan. 4, naming a Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development, a Secretary of Public Safety and an education adviser.
Suzanne Bump, a former state representative, will serve as secretary of labor and workforce development and Kevin Burke, a former district attorney, as secretary of public safety. Patrick also named Dana Mohler-Faria, president of Bridgewater State College, as the special adviser to the governor for education.
From 1985 to 1993, Bump, of Great Barrington, represented Braintree at the Statehouse. During that time, she co-chaired the Committee on Commerce and Labor. Bump, 50, is a partner with McDevitt and Bump and was Patrick’s political director during his gubernatorial campaign.
“I look forward to working with Gov.-elect Patrick to develop a well-prepared workforce, harmonious workplace and a thriving economy,” she said in a statement.
Burke, 60, is a managing partner with the public safety consulting firm Burke and Mawn Consultants. He was a state representative for Beverly, where he lives now, from 1975 to 1979 and later served as district attorney for the Eastern District in Salem.
“I know that Deval Patrick has made the public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth a clear priority for his administration,” Burke said.
Mohler-Faria, 59, is the president of Bridgewater State College. The Air Force veteran served as the executive dean of administrative services and student services at Mount Wachusett Community College, assistant dean of administrative services at Bristol Community College and director of financial aid at Cape Cod Community College.
“I’ve always believed that Massachusetts has the potential to be a national model for preschool through college education,” he said.
