QUINCY, Mass. (AP) – Sean Barry, the former Quincy College president who was fired last year for allegedly mismanaging money, was found dead at his home.

There were no signs of foul play at Barry’s Quincy home, said David Traub, a spokesman for the Norfolk District Attorney’s office. Barry’s body was found Thursday by a friend who had seen Barry alive less than two hours earlier, according to police.

The cause of the 42-year-old’s death Thursday had not immediately been determined Friday pending an autopsy, Traub said.

Barry began at Quincy College in 1991 as a part-time public relations officer and worked his way up to become president of the city-owned, two-year college in 2000.

Barry was credited with stabilizing Quincy College’s finances and increasing enrollment. But he was fired by the school’s governing board in August 2005 amid allegations of abuse of power and mismanagement – allegations Barry denied.

An investigation by The Patriot Ledger of Quincy showed that Barry spent more of the money from the college’s fundraising foundation on travel and entertainment than scholarships.

Barry was also blamed for not discovering a payroll scandal that resulted in the suspension of the school’s surgical technology program.

Barry was diagnosed with leg cancer in 1986 and had a leg amputated six years later.
