LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) – A call from a frightened 17-year-old girl who was staying at her home alone led police to an intruder hiding in her bathroom.
Ryan McCarthy, 29, had a picture of the girl in his pocket when he was found Thursday night, police said.
McCarthy was arraigned Friday on numerous charges including second-degree burglary and possession of narcotics.
He works on a landscaping crew for the girls’ father, who was vacationing in Rhode Island with the rest of the family, according to authorities. The 17-year-old had stayed home to practice her flute for a competition.
The teen locked herself in her bedroom and called her parents when she heard someone in the house late Thursday night.
The parents contacted police and the girls’ grandparents, who live nearby. The girl’s 79-year-old grandfather found Ryan McCarthy in a downstairs bathroom. A police officer also was on patrol about a mile from the home, and quickly responded.
Cooper said the girl and her grandfather were lucky they were not hurt and that McCarthy had no weapon. “It could have had a much different ending,” he said.
