Dear Sun Spots: Like so many other readers, I really enjoy this section of the paper.
My question is not ‘a burning fire’ that needs an immediate response, but here it is:
What is the Water Department’s policy for tanker trucks that fill up at Lake Auburn for pool water? How (I hope) are these trucks charged? – P.B., Lewiston.
Answer: Sun Spots had the pleasure of speaking with Auburn Water & Sewerage District General Manager Norm Lamie, who says this is probably one of the most-asked questions the district gets. There are many residents, like yourself, noting the numbers of tankers taking fill-ups from Lake Auburn and highly interested in seeing whether they, like residents, must pay for it.
“The people who are taking water, with tankers, from Lake Auburn have to get a permit through the Auburn Water District. There is a $25 per tanker fee,” he said.
Lamie says tankers are each inspected, and the companies have to file an annual report with the district that indicates how much water they draw from the lake. They also pay the same amount for water that all others do. In other words, they are paying for watershed-protection efforts; that’s 30 cents per 1,000 gallons.
In addition, Lamie said a policy was implemented by the district last year, and data will be available at the end of the year documenting how this has worked during its debut year.
Dear Sun Spots: I have been helped by your column once before and am hoping you can help me again.
I have a sweater all finished except for about four inches on one sleeve. I’ve run out of yarn and am hoping readers might please be able to help me here. The yarn I’m looking for is Caron No Dye Lot, Color Juniper Green. I’ve searched Maine and Massachusetts to no avail. If someone has just a part of a skein and would please part with it, I’d be very happy. I may be reached at 684-5291 and perhaps I could pick it up. Alternatively, it could be mailed to me, and I’d be happy to pay for the postage. – Audrey in Strong.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, you might consider contact Caron to see if they might be able to locate this item for you. You may reach them at Customer Service, Caron International, P.O. Box 222, Washington, NC 27889, or via phone at 866-336-9185, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, CST.
Dear Sun Spots: The Green Church in Mexico is looking for an apple cider press. We are willing to pay a reasonable price for a working press or just parts. Please call 369-0559 if you can help us. Thanks. – No Name, Mexico.
Dear Sun Spots: I have a complete set of Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedias in mint condition to give, for free, to any group or organization that can use them. I believe that not too long ago there was a group collecting them for children in a Third World country. If they are still interested, or anyone else is, please call me at 514-5159. – No Name, Lewiston.
Dear Sun Spots: Your information in your articles is great. Keep up the good work. Now it’s time for another request for yarn.
I make scarves for South Paris schoolchildren and am now in need of more yarn. If there are any donors out there, I would love to hear from you or receive your yarn donations. I may be reached via mail at P.O. Box 363, South Paris, ME 04281. Please keep me in stitches. – C. Parker, South Paris.
• Many thanks to a sharp reader, Deborah Desjardins of Auburn, who caught some lovely typos in Tuesday’s column about Simard and Payne Memorial Park. The reference to the late Auburn police officer Rodney “Rocky” Bonney, as well as the park’s name, were misspelled in the column. Sun Spots apologizes for the proofing errors.
