Dear Sun Spots: You’ve helped me before, and I was very pleased with all you found out in a short time. Now, if you can help me and others again it would be greatly appreciated.
What has happened to Jennifer Rooks who is on Channel 6? She was super, and we all miss her and are wondering. – No Name, No Town.
Answer: Jennifer Rooks was recently hired as the new host of “MaineWatch,” Maine Public Broadcasting Network’s weekly public affairs series on television, radio and the Internet.
She joined the network on June 4, and the program is on a summer hiatus but will return in September with Rooks, according to MPBN’s Web site.
Rooks is familiar to television viewers throughout Maine from her work over the past 13 years as a news reporter and weekend news anchor at WCSH-TV, Channel 6 in Portland and on sister station WLBZ-TV, Channel 2 in Bangor.
She has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley and worked as an assignment editor, reporter and producer at television stations in San Francisco and Monterey before taking the job at WCSH in 1994.
Not only will she be the host of the show, she is also being hired to play an active role in reformatting the program later this year with a new look and the incorporation of more extensive Web content, and to contribute occasional stories to “Maine Things Considered,” MPBN’s half-hour weekday radio news program.
Jim Dowe, MPBN president and chief executive officer, has been quoted as saying the station is excited and can hardly wait for Rooks to begin.
For her part, Rooks says she’ll miss her colleagues at WCSH but is eager to put her own stamp on MPBN’s long-running “MaineWatch” series. “I’ve always admired the work done by PBS and MPBN, and have long been a member,” she said.
“I’m really excited by this opportunity to help revamp MPBN’s flagship public affairs show and do more in-depth reporting, which is my passion.
I hope to live up to the legacy of Angus King, Don Carrigan, Barbara Cariddi and more recent hosts, and make ‘MaineWatch’ the most interesting and dynamic public affairs program on Maine television.”
Rooks lives in Cape Elizabeth with her husband, Michael, and their two children, Sam and Julia.
