BURLINGTON, Wis. (AP) – Former teacher Bill Meinel related education to dentistry and came away with the title of World Champion Liar for a second time.
“My son’s high school grades went from all As to all Ds. This happened right after he had his wisdom teeth extracted,” Meinel fibbed.
Meinel also won the Burlington Liar’s Club contest in 2003 with this tall tale: “My wife is so indecisive about choosing paint colors, our 1,800-square-foot home is now 1,000 square feet due to all the coats of paint.”
The 62-year-old Meinel, of Burlington, said his latest winner comes from a line he used to pull on students.
Contestant R.M. Eimermann, of Oconomowoc, Wis., won an honorable mention when he said his closet is so damp his wooden shoe trees are sprouting branches.
John Soeth, club president, said there were just under 400 entries this year, many of them having to do with high gasoline prices.
Soeth said Meinel is the first person to win twice in the contest, which traces its start to a club formed in 1929.
If the story can be believed, local journalist Otis Hulett and Manuel Hahn fabricated a news story that year about a lying contest between the Burlington police and fire departments in which the winner the police chief, who denied ever telling a lie.
Hulett closed the club in 1979, and the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce revived it the next year.
Other honorable mentions in results announced this week:
– “Wild Bill” Taylor, from Westbrook, Conn., who wrote that “a fellow had a mind so narrow that all his thoughts went through sideways.”
– Gene Lasch, of Shawano, Wis., who said his neighbor eats so much fish that he gets the urge to swim upstream and spawn.
– Jim Stark, of East Troy, Wis., who wrote, “I work with an old carpenter who has a folding rule, which has all of the markings and numbers worn off. He still uses the rule and explains that his memory is so good that he knows where all the marks and numbers are.”
The champion liar gets a certificate on parchment paper.
The $1 entry fee comes with a lifetime club membership.
