BOW, N.H. (AP) – A local man fatally shot on Friday worked for the state police.
Joseph E. Grigas, 22, shot Elmer F. Rule Jr., 50, three times in the chest and head on Friday night in Grigas’ driveway, a few blocks from Rule’s home. Grigas then shot himself in the head, according to a news release from Attorney General Kelly A. Ayotte.
Authorities said the men knew each other, but wouldn’t give details about their relationship or speculate on a motive for the slayings. They are calling the shooting a murder-suicide.
Rule worked as a dispatch supervisor for the state police and was returning home after his shift at state police headquarters in Concord at the time of the shooting.
A father, he had helped coach the women’s soccer team at Bow High School when his daughter was a student there.
Neighbors said Grigas, who lived with his family, recently graduated from Bow High School and had recently returned from serving in a Navy reserve unit. He faced charges of driving while intoxicated and drug possession after an arrest last month.
Police recovered the weapon used at the scene, but would not release further information.
