SHELTON, Conn. (AP) – Federal health and safety officials have proposed a $20,100 fine against a Bridgeport contractor for the death of a mason in June.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Monday said Edwardo Osello Masonry LLC failed to properly guard against the collapse of a trench that killed Ademilson Vieira. He was trapped beneath 11 feet of earth and rock in an accident in Shelton on June 18.
OSHA said the trench lacked a safe means of entry and exit, stairs leading to a deck next to the trench were not protected against collapse and workers in the trench lacked head protection and were not protected against stones falling into the excavation.
OSHA issued seven serious citations in addition to the fines. The agency defines a serious violation as a condition where there is a substantial possibility that death or serious physical harm could result to an employee.
The company may request a meeting to contest the proposed penalties.
Calls to the company and its lawyer seeking comment were not immediately returned Monday.
