OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Two men pleaded innocent Wednesday to murder charges in the shooting death of Dartmouth College student Meleia Willis-Starbuck, their former high school classmate.
Christopher Hollis, 22, of Hayward, and Christopher Wilson, 20, of Berkeley, entered pleas in Alameda County Superior Court.
Willis-Starbuck, 19, was killed July 17 on a Berkeley street, moments after calling Hollis for help as she and some friends argued with a group of young men. Police said she told Hollis to “bring the heat,” meaning bring a gun.
Authorities believe that when Hollis arrived, he fired at the men from a car, unintentionally shooting Willis-Starbuck. Police say Wilson was the driver.
Hollis eluded police for two months, but was arrested in Fresno in late September.
John Burris, Hollis’ attorney, said the incident began when Willis-Starbuck and some female friends got into “an intense verbal altercation” with some University of California, Berkeley football players.
The attorney said Willis-Starbuck called Hollis several times. Burris said when Hollis got there he tried to scare the men away but did not intend to harm anyone.
“He certainly was not trying to hit her or anyone else. He thought he was shooting over their heads,” Burris said.
Gary Doxy, 18, a red-shirt freshman defense back on Cal’s nationally ranked football team ,was grazed in the hand by a bullet.
Burris said Hollis left, not knowing Willis-Starbuck had been hit.
