BOSTON (AP) – A big puddle in the Big Dig led to a temporary lane closure on the southbound side of the Interstate 93 tunnel Wednesday night.
Massachusetts Turnpike Authority spokeswoman Mariellen Burns said workers from Modern Continental were using water at about 8 p.m. to prepare concrete for a northbound access ramp still under construction. She said a temporary pump shorted out, sending water into the right lane of the highway.
State Police spokeswoman Lt. Sharon Costine said the lane was closed for about 45 minutes while the water was cleared away.
Burns said the pumps were repaired and all lanes of the highway were open Wednesday night. She said the incident did not involve a leak or the permanent pumps for the highway.
The $14.6 billion highway project has been plagued for years by cost overruns and management problems. In September, water broke though a faulty wall panel and flooded the northbound tunnel, backing up rush-hour traffic for miles. A subsequent investigation found hundreds of smaller leaks.
