BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) – The Bennington Car Show will move to the Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal.
After exhausting all other possible venues, organizers announced this week that the car show will go on as scheduled in September.
There has been some doubt about the event taking place this year as organizers scrambled to find a new home for the show in recent months. The antique car show has taken place at Willow Park and the former Bijur company for the last 18 years. But Bennington Self Storage now has a contract to buy the land. The company has offered the land for one more show, but construction on the site will not make that feasible, organizer said.
The September show will only take place at the track this one year. A subcommittee has already been formed to work with the Mount Anthony Union Middle School to hold the show there in the future, he said.
The Bennington Chamber of Commerce and car show organizers tried to move the show to the school this year but the request came too late. School administrators felt that closing school for two days while the show went on would be detrimental to the fall testing schedule.
Progress Partners Ltd., which bought the track in December, wants the car show to make a long-term home there, according to the Chamber of Commerce. Progress Partners could not be reached for comment.
“They have been generous in understanding our need to keep the show a Bennington’ event,” wrote the chamber.
